"Thorpe Looks Good, But Chiefs Carrying Many Receivers"
Player: Craphonso ThorpeNews Item: 2588 - Posted By: altopalo - At: 2006-06-13 18:28:52
News: Even Craphonso Thorpe doesn’t feel comfortable. Remember Cro? The track star from Florida State with first-round potential and first-year brain cramps? Thorpe has been impressive enough in offseason workouts that he’s drawn kudos from everyone from quarterback Trent Green to hall-of-fame receiver Charlie Joiner. But here Thorpe stands, in front of his locker after a long workout, contemplating the fragility of a young receiver’s life in the NFL. McCready, McIntyre, Melendez, Metcalf. That’s some of Thorpe’s competition, and it’s just scratching the M’s.

News: "I'm lighter and leaner," said a smiling McGahee, who set losing weight and adding muscle as an off-season goal because he admitted he felt "sluggish" at the end of the disappointing 2005 season playing at probably close to 240 pounds. "I look lighter, right?" he said, lifting his shirt to reveal an enviable set of abdominal muscles, but refusing to divulge how much weight he had lost. "I've got some abs going. It was just something I wanted to do, change the look a little."

News: t's only June, but if fans were looking for a glimmer of hope, they would have been encouraged by the passing drills at the stadium Monday morning. Losman was terrific. On a day when players were required to at least make an appearance, Losman made a good impression, too. Losman was the best of the three quarterbacks. He made quick reads and sharp, accurate throws. He seemed relaxed and confident. You could see it in his body language. He said the action seemed to unfold more slowly than before.

"McNair Struggling With Ravens Offense"
Player: Steve McNairNews Item: 2583 - Posted By: altopalo - At: 2006-06-13 18:06:42
News: A three-time Pro Bowl selection, McNair often appeared hesitant Tuesday. He completed his first pass in team drills to tight end Todd Heap, but struggled at hitting receivers in stride. One late, errant pass was nearly intercepted, but defensive back Robb Butler dropped the football. "He was thinking a lot," Ravens coach Brian Billick said of McNair, a 2003 NFL Co-Most Valuable Player. "He looked a little like a rookie coming out here. Obviously, he's got a lot to absorb right now." McNair acknowledged that the experience was a bit confusing and that it felt a bit strange to wear a No. 9 purple jersey after spending his career with Tennessee. The Titans plays kept flashing through his head. "I had a few mishaps out there," McNair said. "I think I used one of my calls I had last year with the Titans. I told the guys to just be patient with me."

Player: Ben RoethlisbergerNews Item: 2582 - Posted By: altopalo - At: 2006-06-13 11:15:39
News: Despite several warnings, and a fine example in Kellen Winslow Jr., Big Ben rode his big bike right into the windshield of an oncoming car. He fractured his face, broke his jaw, and may have hurt a knee or two. He is rumored to miss up to 9 weeks - read most of training camp and potentially some of pre-season. The season starts 12 weeks from now. Hope he's back in time. The Steelers were ranked #1 in many recently published power rankings. That will change if Pittsburgh has to rely on Charlie Batch to lead the Offense.

"Titans name veteran QB Billy Volek their starter"
Player: Billy VolekNews Item: 2581 - Posted By: jwetzel - At: 2006-06-09 18:41:54
News: The Tennessee Titans named veteran QB Billy Volek their starter for 2006. Volek, an undrafted free agent in 2000 out of Fresno State, has been working with the first-team offense in minicamps all spring, and Fisher said the coaches will prepare Volek, Young and Matt Mauck to play this season. "How things are going to unfold, I can't be specific. But I can say Billy is going to line up as our starter. He inherits the role now, and we're getting Vince ready to play as quickly as we can," Fisher said by telephone.
FFDN Take:
( altopalo )
Volek to start.... for now -- Jeff Fisher has openly said that Vince will get time this year. The Titan's owner want Young to play in the Houston game in December. Plus, one can assume that the Titans have a good shot at losing 5 of their first six games with opponents like (San Diego, Miami, Dallas, Indy, Washington). With a poor start, the pressure to get the new franchise on the field will be intense.

"Ravens acquire QB Steve McNair, name him starter..."
Player: Steve McNairNews Item: 2580 - Posted By: jwetzel - At: 2006-06-09 18:38:50
News: The Baltimore Ravens acquired veteran QB Steve McNair from the Tennessee Titans on Thursday and signed him to a 5 year contract. The agreement pays McNair $12 million in 2006, and they named him the starter for 2006. Kyle Boller will backup McNair.
FFDN Take:
( altopalo )
McNair Won't Solve All Problems... -- The hype is flying in Baltimore right now. But one should keep a few things in mind before placing bets on the Ravens in Vegas. 1) McNair is old and VERY beaten up. 2) Baltimore's O-Line is a run first line. They aren't great at pass protection. 3) #1 + #2 could mean McNair won't be playing the whole season. 4) There is no reason to believe the running game will flourish - J. Lew hasn't given us any reason to think he'll bounce back to old form & Mike Anderson was dropped from Denver b/c Shannahan thought he was out of gas. 5) #4 means that Baltimore will rely on the pass more which isn't their strength despite high expectations from the trio of Mason, Heap, and Clayton. When you consider the possibility of #3 Baltimore may have to puruse a pass strategy with Boller. We know how that goes. 6) Baltimore's defense will be strong. But they too are very old. Can Ray Ray last the entire season? Can the secondary come back from their 2005 injuries? Lots of questions on D. All in all McNair is a good addition for Baltimore - but don't go making any wagers on a Lombardi trophy just yet. There are a lot of questions for Baltimore between here and Miami.
